The CMOS Battery Replacement Guide

Information about the computer’s hardware, such as the number of disks, the amount of memory, the date, the time, and so on, must be entered every time the machine boots up. In the past, the user always entered this data during system startup. However, the development of computer technology has led to this crucial data being kept on a CMOS chip installed on the motherboard. This crucial data is stored on a chip and is provided at boot time.

The minimal amount of power required for a CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) chip is provided by a CMOS battery. When used frequently, this battery can power a computer for years. If the computer loses track of the current date and time or the following error messages appear every time you turn it on, it may be time to replace the CMOS battery.

The following are some symptoms that your computer may have a dead CMOS battery:

1. The computer won’t turn on.

There is a possibility that errors like “CMOS read error,” “CMOS battery error,” “CMOS settings wrong,” and “CMOS Checksum Error” will appear during startup.

Thirdly, improper installation of software.

Fourth, the drivers are corrupt, and the computer shuts down unexpectedly.

As long as you know what you’re doing, swapping out a CMOS battery is a breeze.

First, write down the current CMOS settings before you change the battery. You can do this by starting the computer and noting the first settings and figures shown. Make sure you cover all the bases. (Hint: Most computers have a button or command that lets you pause the startup process by pressing a key on the keyboard.)

You have saved all your changes and are ready to turn off your computer. To prevent electrostatic discharge, leave the power cord plugged into the wall while disconnecting all other cables from the rear of your system. Because the power line acts as an earth, you can safely access your computer’s system without damaging its delicate parts. However, there should be a switch on the back of your computer near the power cord and possibly another on the wall outlet itself.

Third, open the cabinet by taking off the lid on one side. The CMOS battery is installed in a holder on the motherboard and can be accessed after the cover is removed. The battery will be relatively large compared to other parts, making it easier to locate. Take down the serial number, installation instructions, and any other information you can find on the battery. (Assume the Down or Up Position?)

Find a new battery right now. You may find several places to get these batteries if you look online. Follow the link at the bottom to visit the Pioneer Batteries website, where you’ll find the industry’s lowest pricing and fastest shipping times. A CMOS battery is also widely available at computer and consumer electronics retailers.

Fifth, after purchasing a replacement battery, you can easily remove the old one by poking it with a dull item and inserting the new one. Replace the battery while keeping the polarities in mind. (How about upside down?) The voltage rating, however, is the most crucial.

Close the computer back up after replacing the battery, and turn it on. You may need to reset the time and date. For this, please review your notes from Step 1.

CMOS batteries often take the form of a coin or a barrel, though this might vary from motherboard to motherboard. However, you should be aware that these batteries have varying voltage ratings before you purchase any for your computer.
